Primary care sports medicine also encompasses the orthopedic needs of the general population.
Primary care sports medicine is an integral part of the sports medicine team at Asheville Orthopaedic Associates and Mission Sports Medicine. Our fellowship-trained and board-certified primary care sports medicine physicians have experience working at the highest levels of collegiate and professional sports, and they are committed to the health of our area athletes as well as the orthopedic needs of Western North Carolina.
Our primary care sports medicine physicians work seamlessly in a team with our sports medicine orthopedic surgeons to ensure optimal treatment for athletes.
They provide medical coverage for multiple athletic organizations in the area, including the University of North Carolina Asheville, the Asheville Tourists, Asheville City Soccer, Asheville Club Rugby and other high school and recreational teams. In addition, they have provided medical care for events including the Southern Conference basketball tournament, Haute Route Asheville, and the Hellbender One Hundred Trail Running Race.
Primary care sports medicine also encompasses the orthopedic needs of the general population, including but not limited to the following conditions:
Our primary care sports medicine physicians are trained in the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound for both diagnostic purposes as well as image guidance for therapeutic procedures, allowing precise placement of medications or regenerative products. Primary care sports medicine also includes exercise prescription and clearance and rehabilitation recommendations.
Our physicians also have a passion for training the next wave of sports medicine providers. Dr. Hiza servers as the Director of Primary Care
Sports Medicine for Mission Health and is the fellowship director for the MAHEC Sports Medicine Fellowship, and Dr. Fisher and Dr. Starnes hold appointments as Clinical Assistant Professors in the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. They are proud members of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.
