Primary Care Sports Medicine Physician
Dr. J.D. Hales is a board-certified, fellowship-trained primary care sports medicine physician who specializes in non-operative orthopedics and sports medicine. Dr. Hales has expertise in non-surgical care for injuries and musculoskeletal disorders including fractures, sprains and osteoarthritis, as well as sports-related concussion management and treatment for sports-related illnesses. He uses the latest technologies and treatments, including ultrasound-guided injections and diagnostic ultrasound, and has special interest in ortho-biologic treatments, including platelet-rich-plasma therapy (PRP).
Dr. Hales received his medical education at the Florida State University College of Medicine, and completed his residency in family medicine at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill, where he later completed his fellowship in primary care sports medicine. He treats athletes and active people of all ages and skill levels, and enjoys partnering with patients to help them work towards their goals and general well-being. Dr. Hales served as a team physician for NC Central University and UNC – Chapel Hill athletic teams, as well as several local high schools in Chapel Hill. He traveled with the UNC – Chapel wrestling team to provide care during the 2019 NCAA Championships, and provided medical coverage at the Men’s and Women’s ACC Soccer tournaments, as well as the CIAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball tournaments. Additionally, he spent time in Vermont at the Killington Ski Clinic, where he provided medical care for skiing and snowboarding injuries.
In addition to providing patient care, Dr. Hales has taken part in multiple research studies, has contributed to a textbook chapter and has presented research and case reports at several family medicine and sports medicine conferences.
Dr. Hales resides in western North Carolina with his wife, who is a hospitalist at Mission Hospital, their two young children and dog. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, trail running, home improvement projects and exploring the beauty of western North Carolina with his family.
Dr. Hales sees patients at our Asheville, Biltmore Park and Franklin office.
