If an interpreter is necessary, we may limit the total number of people with the patient. Visitors must be over the age of 16 and meet screening criteria prior to entering the facility. Asheville Orthopaedic Associates (AOA) is the official orthopedic provider for Mission Sports Medicine and is the region’s premier team of fellowship-trained sports medicine specialists. Whether caring for an elite, mountain sports athlete or the weekend warrior, our unique team ensures unparalleled expertise in the diagnosis, treatment of injuries and conditions impacting people at all levels of activity.
As a dedicated supporter of area athletics, AOA is proud to be the team physicians for the University of North Carolina Asheville, the Asheville Tourists minor league baseball team, Asheville City Soccer, several local and regional high schools and many other recreational athletic organizations.
AOA’s team of both operative and non-operative providers pride ourselves in helping patients avoid surgery by utilizing cutting edge regenerative medicine and non-surgical treatments when possible.
However, if it does come to surgery, our sub-specialty trained physicians offer cutting edge surgical treatments including cartilage restoration, hip preservation, as well has shoulder and knee reconstruction.

Over the years, the members of the AOA sports medicine team have provided care for athletes and have been involved in the education and advancement of sports medicine at all levels, including numerous collegiate and professional teams. Professionally, our providers have taken care of the Chicago Bulls, the Chicago White sox, the Indianapolis Colts, Carolina Hurricanes, and the Charleston River Dogs minor league baseball teams. Collegiately, they have been part of the medical teams at Wake Forest University, Purdue University, the University of Virginia, James Madison University UNC Chapel Hill, DePaul University, Wabash College and Colorado College.
Several of our providers have held prior academic teaching appointments and have served in high levels in various sports medicine societies. Dr. Walt Curl has served as the president of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) and has been inducted into the AOSSM Hall of Fame, the highest honor in sports medicine.
