If an interpreter is necessary, we may limit the total number of people with the patient. Visitors must be over the age of 16 and meet screening criteria prior to entering the facility. Walton W. Curl, M.D. graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1968. After spending a year in Vietnam as an Infantry Platoon Leader, he went on to graduate from Duke University Medical School in 1974. He completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery in the Army and a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the United States Military Academy under Dr. John Feagin. He was the team physician for West Point upon completion of his fellowship and retired as a Colonel in the United States Army.
From 1988 until 2002 he was the team physician for Wake Forest University. He then became the first Chairman of Orthopedic Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia. In 2007 he returned to the orthopedic faculty at Wake Forest University Medical Center and works with the Sports Medicine Program. He is a past president of the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine and the Herodicus Sports Medicine Society. He currently serves on the board of directors for Special Olympics of North Carolina. His numerous articles in the area of Sports Medicine are primarily associated with anterior cruciate ligament injuries and rehabilitation. He has participated in basic science research on the effects of cold therapy on muscle contusions and is currently is involved in tissue engineering projects involving ligament and cartilage stem cells. His primary interest is in the treatment of ACL and Cartilage Injuries.
Walt and his wife Kay are the parents of two married sons and the grandparents of one granddaughter, and two grandsons. His hobbies and interests include restoring British sports cars, fly fishing and sailing.
